Murph’s Study Hall is located at 850 Jessop Pl, in York Pa 17403.   It is a family run business with customers of all ages over 21.

Murph’s Study Hall has a rich and evolving history that stretches back more than half a century.
The story begins in the 1960s, when the location was home to Snyder’s Ice Cream. By the late ’60s, it had become Frank’s Steak Shop, before undergoing a major transformation in 1972 when it was purchased by Art Murphy. Under Art’s ownership, the venue first operated as a beer-only bar called “The Watering Hole.” Soon after, Art secured a full liquor license, and on June 10, 1975, the bar reopened under a new name that would become a York institution—Murph’s Study Hall.
In the early 1980s, ownership passed from Art to his son Tom Murphy, continuing the family legacy. Then in 2007, the Kanellakis family took over.

The torch was passed again in 2017 when Pete and Tina became the proud new owners, keeping the Murph’s Study Hall a family owned and run business..
Like so many establishments, Murph’s temporarily closed its doors in 2020 due to state mandates, but the downtime provided an opportunity to renovate and refresh, ensuring the bar came back stronger than ever.
Through every chapter, Murph’s Study Hall has remained a true staple of the York community—one of the city’s oldest bars and a hidden gem just steps from York College. Known for its nostalgic, welcoming tavern atmosphere, Murph’s offers a safe and fun environment for both locals and students over 21. With one of the largest dance floors in York, unbeatable happy hours, and the best drinks in town, Murph’s continues to set the standard for nightlife.
True to its reputation as a trendsetter, Murph’s has introduced York to some of its most memorable events—Trivia Tuesdays, Music Bingo, and legendary Black Light Parties. While other clubs chased trends, Murph’s stayed true to its roots, keeping the dance floor alive with the best dance music in the area.
